  12. But with the arrest of 22-year-old Ramsey Orta, the bystander who captured video of the fatal chokehold, the death of Garner has now produced another important conversation beyond the issue of police brutality. Coming just one day after the autopsy report, Orta’s arrest has reignited the concern many have about the targeting by police of people involved in documenting and exposing their abuses, and the relation of such to the intimidation of people and movements advocating, or that would advocate, for social justice.

  13. Now I’m not about to give you some sappy article about my transitioning “story” and all the highs and lows of this experience so far. That is not really important compared to the severe lack of access to trans* related medical care, especially within communities of color. For that reason, I want to give you the mechanical part of my journey that starts from before I even knew how to get hormones to today, August 5 – when I am almost 6 months on testosterone (and broke, unemployed, and brown) – in an effort to give those out there some hope, information, stories of experience, and hopefully guidance.

  15. It is a good thing that tribute was given to the memory of the Young Lords; it was a revolutionary movement in the history of an oppressed people who deserve it. Perhaps in a future revolutionary United States the George Washington Bridge, the FDR Drive or an interstate highway can all be named after the Young Lords, the Black Panther Party and other revolutionary legends.

The point is that with the power of a people’s movement not only can we change the name to given locations, we can also change the existing social, economic and political reality.
